What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping Therapy is an ancient Chinese technique used to create suction and negative pressure on an area of the body that might be tight, adhered, or immobile. It draws out inflammation from deep in the tissues and increases local blood supply to the muscles and skin. New blood to an area can help to bring fresh nutrients and oxygen while flushing away the toxins trapped from old blood. It is a wonderful technique used to release restrictions in fascia and scar tissue. Cupping marks will be left on the body, but will disappear in a few short days.
What is Gua Sha Therapy
The word “Gua” means to scrape and “Sha” refers to the blood stasis and qi (or energy) that blocks the proper flow. It is performed to the depth comfortable for the patient and in a stroking manner as if to push the Sha out of the body. Gua Sha has two main functions: detoxification and cell nourishment. Detoxifications refers to petechiae which is a byproduct that triggers the body to process cleansing of the area and eliminates both dead blood cells and toxins from the skin surface. Cell nourishment occurs after the detoxification process and it forces more blood and oxygen to the areas where petechiae was found. You may be left with faint red marks where the petechiae formed, but all of which will disappear in several days.
What is Kinesio Taping?
Kinesio Taping was invented by Dr. Kenzo Kase from Japan and has been used by Olympic Athletes such as Kerri Walsh. Presently, all types of people have been using it from runners and crossfitters to even after surgeries. KT Tape is a stretchy-adhesive tape that depending on the application can provide assistance with relaxing or contracting a muscle, provide support to a joint and can improve lymphatic draining in a swollen ankle. KT Tape works by microscopically lifting the skin up thus increasing the interstitial space and allowing for decrease in inflammation, reducing pressure while enabling a more effective flow of circulation.
